Two Giant Pandas Leave Chengdu for Zoo Atlanta

The departure

China Central Television reported that Pingping and Fushuang boarded a chartered plane out of Chengdu early Sunday for Zoo Atlanta. Before takeoff, they received a formal send-off at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Who the pandas are

Ping Ping is a male born in March 2020, known for big, dark eye patches and a habit of scrambling up trees. Born in October 2020, the female Fu Shuang stands out for a little puff of fur atop her head and for how swiftly she tracks down enrichment foods hidden by her keepers.

Travel and care plans

Chinese authorities put together a detailed plan for the trans-Pacific trip, including supplies that featured apples, fresh bamboo shoots, plus medicines for emergencies. The pandas were trained ahead of time to ease travel stress. Once in Atlanta, they will enter quarantine, with Chinese veterinarians and keepers staying on site to help them adjust to their new surroundings.
