Small Firms Pay the Price When Google's AI Gives Wrong Answers

Published Aug 11, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Google's AI Overviews attributed negative reviews to a small plastics retailer that belonged to other companies.
  • Owner Damian Mansell says the false summary damaged The Plastics Shed, which he launched in early 2025.
  • Researchers warn a single AI answer replaces the old list of links, leaving little room to correct mistakes.

The Search Result Is Now a Single Answer

Looking for a business on Google used to mean sorting through links. Now you get one tidy AI summary, and when it's wrong, the business pays for it.

Damian Mansell set up The Plastics Shed, an online seller of building plastics, in early 2025. Google's AI told shoppers his reviews were mostly negative, listing complaints about late deliveries, dishonest employees, and damaged goods.

The complaints were actually about other companies.

The same summary said his customer-service problems were a major pattern, even though some of his real reviews were positive.

"I can see how that happens, but why should it happen with Google?" Mansell said. "I mean, obviously, the forefront of AI technology."

One Answer Instead of Many

Chirag Shah, who teaches at the University of Washington Information School, described the difference this way. "With the traditional search engine, the user sees multiple things. So if one of them has something wrong, chances are something else would counterbalance it."

An April New York Times report said Google handles over five trillion searches a year. Even if nine times out of 10 the AI summaries are right, that leaves half a trillion wrong ones.

Its sources include corporate websites, Reddit threads, decade-old blog posts, and Yelp reviews. It often shows links that don't back up what it wrote, so it can invent plausible falsehoods.

Reputations on the Line

Betty Whitney runs NW Select Property Management in Idaho. Google's AI mixed her firm with a similarly named company that shut down years earlier and added reviews from property managers in other states.

"If I'm a customer, and I'm looking for a property management company, and I look at the AI overview, I wouldn't call me," she said.

Philippa Main works in real estate in Northern Virginia. Three years after moving from Florida, Google still says she has operated in the Tampa Bay area since 2014, right above her Virginia address.

"There's so much competition in my industry that if any single thing seems off, someone's just going to call the next person on the list," Main said.

Ben Fisher runs Steady Demand, an agency that helps small/) businesses rank in Google searches, a service known as SEO. The AI labeled his own agency a scam because of an old Reddit thread about an app with a similar name.

"The big problem is there's nobody to contact. The other big problem is you search once, and you're done," he said.

Lily Ray, an SEO consultant, calls AI Overviews the biggest change to search she has seen in 16 years. She says leaning on Reddit and YouTube comments can go wrong fast, and companies with little online presence or easily confused names are exposed.

Michael King, founder of iPullRank, said the AI runs hidden searches and feeds the results to the software that writes the answer.

The problem is compounded by the fact that Google's AI overviews are generated automatically without human review. When a business owner spots an error, there is no direct way to appeal. The only recourse is to wait for Google's algorithms to update, which can take weeks or months. In the meantime, the false information continues to appear in search results, potentially driving away customers.

A German court has temporarily ruled that Google can be held responsible for inaccurate statements in its AI overviews, a decision Google says it will appeal.

What This Means for You

Mansell says the overview for The Plastics Shed now looks good and matches his mostly positive real reviews.

"AI gives the common man the knowledge, but it can also ruin the common man," he said.

The AI answer reads with confidence, and many users act on it without checking other sources. A fix can take weeks, as Mansell found, and the damage is often impossible to count.

Fiat Currency Runs on Trust, and the World Just Stopped Trusting the Dollar
  • Gold has overtaken US treasuries as the world's top reserve asset, and central banks are now buying less US debt and more gold.
  • The US dollar is a fiat currency, meaning it's backed by a promise rather than gold, so it loses value when fewer countries want to hold it.
  • Whether the US economy or its national debt grows faster from here decides which assets stand to benefit next.

Why RAM Prices Are Soaring - and Where the Money Is Moving
  • Memory chips - the RAM inside phones, laptops, fridges, and trucks - are in a shortage Tim Cook called a 100-year flood, and some memory prices have climbed about 90% in a single quarter.
  • Four forces hit at once: AI demand, a production shutdown in 2023, build times that push any fix to 2028 at the earliest, and a bombed helium plant in Qatar.
  • The last two supply shocks ended in aggressive Fed rate hikes and market drops of around 45% and 20%, and this time Washington is spending heavily to bring memory production home.

How Is the Economy Doing? Washington Says It's Fixed, but the Numbers Don't Agree
  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the economy is fixed because lower earners' incomes are now rising faster than top earners'.
  • The Atlanta Fed and Bank of America show different numbers, and Hilton, Marriott, and McDonald's can't agree on what they're seeing either.
  • Whichever side is right, the economy is built to make investors rich, and inflation is how it does it.

US National Debt Hits $40 Trillion: Why the Economy Hasn't Collapsed Yet
  • The US national debt crossed $40 trillion in 2026 and is growing faster than the economy. The debt to GDP ratio now sits at 125%, the highest outside the pandemic and higher than World War II.
  • On September 9, 2026, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent rolled out an emergency plan for the government to lend money to itself. Ray Dalio now says the dollar has roughly three years before real pain.
  • Empires rarely default. They debase. Since 1971, median household income grew about 8x while houses grew 17x and the S&P 500 grew 360x, so investors got richer while workers fell behind.

Your 401k Is Fueling the AI Bubble
  • About $10 trillion of 401k money sits in a $77 trillion stock market, mostly through target date funds and S&P 500 funds. Roughly 30% of every S&P 500 dollar lands in five AI-heavy tech stocks.
  • Four bubble signals run hotter today than before the 2000 crash: top-ten concentration, tech's share of the index, the Buffett Indicator, and how much of the market index funds own.
  • You only lock in an AI bubble loss if you sell. The 2022, 2020, 2008, and 2000 crashes were all buying windows for long-term investors, and the US-China AI race means government money could keep flowing in.

What Is Wealth Preservation? How To Protect Your Money From Anything

  • It leans on assets that hold steady when markets fall - gold, Treasury bonds, and companies that keep earning through wars, crashes, and pandemics.

Why Is Everything So Expensive? Why Prices May Never Come Back Down
  • Official inflation is 3.4% and prices are up 32% since 2020, but rent (41%), gas (47%), car insurance (64%) and ground beef (79%) all outran the 28% median wage.
  • The Federal Reserve targets 2% inflation on purpose. Rising prices push extra dollars to investors and shrink the real cost of a $40 trillion national debt.
  • Investors who simply owned the S&P 500 gained about 150% over the same six years, and the Fed's September 16 decision will show whether it protects the dollar or the economy first.
