Mission and schedule
Piyush Goyal is wheels up Tuesday for a week in the US, with one big item at the top of his list: close out an interim trade agreement that New Delhi and Washington worked out earlier this year. He'll be in Milwaukee for the G20 trade ministers meeting on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, and he plans bilateral talks with his American counterpart while there.
Sticking points and fresh risks
The interim pact isn't signed yet, and negotiators are still ironing out tariff rates. An added complication is a newly enacted US law granting President Donald Trump the power to slap duties of as much as 100% on nations that purchase Russian oil and gas. India has previously cautioned that such measures could strain ties and roil global energy markets. Just last week, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar flagged worries over the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act in a discussion with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Political and business outreach
Alongside the government-to-government work, Goyal plans to sit down with chief executives of American companies representing a wide array of industries, from factory production and consumer brands to agriculture-linked enterprises, retail chains, and the tech sector. According to the ministry late Monday, the aim of his discussions with his US counterpart is to "advance a balanced and mutually beneficial" trade deal.
