In Nepal, 20 people died due to landslides and windstorms, according to a Monday update on X from Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. Across the border in India's Uttar Pradesh, authorities said 81 people died in the heavy rains, according to information from the Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner's office carried by The Times of India.
This latest round of deadly weather lands just a month after catastrophic flooding in August that began when a glacier failed along the Nepal - China border. Updated data from Nepal's disaster authority estimate the August toll at nearly 1,500 fatalities, and over 5,000 individuals remain missing. Experts say the Himalayas remain unstable and at risk of more collapses.
On Sunday, Nepal's disaster authority reported landslides in the north-central Manang and Mustang districts that blocked local river flow. An avalanche struck Himlung Himal in Manang the same day. The Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, which led rescue efforts, said four people died and 12 are missing. With roughly 14 feet of snow burying base camp, the group said searches have been "temporarily paused."
