What the Regulator Decided
The Financial Reporting Council announced the sanction on Thursday after reviewing Deloitte's audits of subsidiaries of the transport group. The watchdog highlighted shortcomings during the 2016 to 2020 financial years, saying Deloitte "failed to enquire sufficiently failed to apply sufficient professional skepticism, and failed to evaluate the evidence indicating the existence of fraud risk factors." The penalty was initially set at £11 million, then reduced due to the firm's cooperation and early admissions.

What Deloitte and Go-Ahead Said and Did
Deloitte UK said, "We regret that aspects of our audit work did not meet the standards expected and have learned from this matter." It added, "We are committed to continuous improvement and the delivery of high quality audits." The FRC also noted that its inquiry into the firm's audits for the 2021 financial year has been concluded.
In 2022, Kinetic Group and Globalvia Inversiones SA, heading a consortium, completed a £714 million transaction that removed Go-Ahead Group from the public markets.
Why It Matters for Investors
Audits are one of the guardrails for your money, and penalties like this show where those guardrails bent. With the 2021 probe closed, attention turns to whether Deloitte's promised improvements show up in future work. If you own companies that rely on complex audits, this is a reminder to pay attention to audit quality when you skim those annual reports.
Penalties this size reshape how firms price and staff their audits. Join Market Briefs free and follow the enforcement.
