Alibaba's Open-Source AI Reaches 3 Billion Downloads, Topping Google and Meta

Summary:
  • Over the past six months, Alibaba's Qwen open models have been downloaded more than 3 billion times.
  • Hugging Face's Aug. 14 report showed Google with 418 million downloads and Meta with 227 million.
  • More than 460 Qwen models have been released by Alibaba, and over 300,000 derivatives have been built on them.

Why Developers Are Choosing Qwen

When you think of AI leaders, names like OpenAI and Google probably come to mind first. But a quieter player from China just passed them both in a key metric that shows which models developers are actually building on.

Hugging Face's Aug. 14 report on the open-model landscape shows Alphabet's Google recorded 418 million downloads and Meta recorded 227 million in 2026. Alibaba's Qwen blew past both.

Open models are free to download, modify, and use as building blocks for new products. So the download totals show which technologies developers trust enough to build their businesses on. "Developers now treat Qwen as the standard default when choosing models to fine-tune and put into production," the report said.

Because Hugging Face is the platform where open models are distributed, its download counts are a useful measure of developer adoption. The gap between Qwen's 3 billion downloads and the totals for Google and Meta shows how much momentum Alibaba has built in a short period.

Just as developers trust a proven model, a steady investing habit wins, so get the free Always Be Buying eBook.

That broad lineup creates a self-reinforcing cycle: more developers adopt the models, more spin-offs appear, and those attract even more users.

The Race Between U.S. and Chinese AI

Qwen's popularity is a sign that China's approach to AI is catching on outside the country. Chinese firms like Alibaba, Moonshot AI, and DeepSeek are matching near-frontier performance while trying to close the distance from U.S. proprietary systems like OpenAI and Anthropic.

The strategy is simple: offer capable models that are cheap and easy to customize. That combination is proving hard to beat, even as U.S. companies fight back. Meta and Nvidia have each rolled out new open AI models in recent weeks as competition heats up.

Chip export controls and AI restrictions do not appear to be slowing Chinese efforts. That includes a temporary ban this summer on overseas use of Anthropic's Fable 5 model. The restrictions may be creating friction, but the download numbers suggest they are not stopping momentum.

What This Means for Your Portfolio

Alibaba is also widening its lead by making Qwen available through its cloud service to business customers in Southeast Asia and Africa. That gives it an advantage over many rivals who focus mainly on Western markets.

For investors, the takeaway is about competition and choice. The AI race is not a one-way race anymore. Chinese open models are becoming serious alternatives to U.S. systems, and that pressure could keep prices down and innovation moving fast.

The bottom line: When developers around the world choose which AI models to build on, they are increasingly picking Alibaba. That is a trend worth watching, especially if you hold tech stocks or are curious about where the next wave of AI growth comes from. The race is far from over, but the download numbers show the playing field is shifting.
