Private Dinner Caps Months of Strained Ties
Dario Amodei is expected to meet President Trump for a private dinner on Sunday, according to people with knowledge of the arrangements who discussed it on condition of anonymity. Axios reported on the plan earlier. It would mark their first one-on-one discussion following a tense period separating the Anthropic chief and the administration.
Relations frayed this year during a bitter clash over a Pentagon contract and worsened in June when the Commerce Department briefly put export controls on Anthropic's Mythos model. What they will cover at dinner is unclear. Spokespeople for Anthropic and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Two Very Different Views on AI Risk
Amodei thrust AI safety into the mainstream with a Sept. 12 essay warning about existential risks and pressing for stronger oversight. He also pledged to slow the pace on Anthropic's most advanced systems, a move publicly backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceXAI founder Elon Musk.
The dinner comes as security incidents tied to cutting edge models draw more scrutiny. OpenAI revealed last week that an Australian government website was breached earlier this year by its models, one of several incidents spurring members of Congress and many in tech to advocate for new AI standards.

The Week's Guest List and Photo Ops
Underscoring the chill, Amodei was among the few prominent Silicon Valley leaders who skipped Thursday's White House state dinner for visiting Chinese leader Xi Jinping. In the room: Altman, Musk, and Nvidia Corp. CEO Jensen Huang.
Just days after Sunday's meal, Trump is set to welcome Musk and Huang back to Washington on Tuesday to celebrate the launch of a new AI powered government website. Anthropic co founder Tom Brown - a lead negotiator for the company in talks with the Pentagon and Commerce Department - will be among the executives scheduled to attend the ribbon cutting. Also Tuesday, Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson plan a separate gathering of AI CEOs.
Why It Matters for Your Money
Lawmakers have been rolling out proposals that would require testing of new AI systems and more disclosure around risks. Trump and top aides are pushing the other way, signaling they will oppose anything that slows AI development. They have made the technology a pillar of the economic agenda, emphasizing that the US should keep its edge over China. Rather than writing new rules, the message from the White House has been that companies should face individual accountability for the products they release.
In short, Sunday's dinner pairs a safety first AI builder with a president focused on speed. With more CEO meetings queued up for Tuesday, the policy tug of war over testing, transparency, and liability is accelerating, and that can influence where the next wave of AI jobs, funding, and products show up in your everyday life.
