What Transnet announced
South Africa's state-owned ports and rail group is inviting private firms to qualify for a role expanding and operating the Ngqura manganese export corridor. The plan carries a potential price tag of up to 44 billion rand ($2.7 billion), and Transnet issued a request for qualifications on Friday.
Why the upgrade matters now
The corridor hauls manganese from the Northern Cape to Eastern Cape ports, with shipments moving through several harbors, including Port Elizabeth and Ngqura. Transnet says those facilities have become fragmented and inefficient, pushing more freight onto roads, inflating logistics costs, and adding environmental and social strain. South Africa holds some of the world's largest manganese reserves, used in steelmaking and in batteries, so getting this route right is a competitiveness issue, not just a convenience play.

How the plan is structured and what it means
Transnet says the project sits within its private sector participation program, described as "through which the company seeks to attract investment and leverage private-sector expertise to strengthen infrastructure performance." Applications must be submitted by Feb. 26. If the partnership lifts capacity and reliability, miners could move more volume by rail and ship, which tends to lower unit costs over time. For your wallet, that is the kind of slow, boring improvement that can stabilize export flows and, in turn, the broader South African growth story investors watch.
