A push from Ottawa and a fast-ticking deadline
Talks hit a wall last week, and Joly clarified the government "didn't participate in any form of negotiation or endorsement whatsoever" regarding discussions between Roshel and Stellantis.
The Roshel bid and the union's hard no
The stalemate followed armored-vehicle maker Roshel Inc. announcing it had signed a memo mapping out steps to acquire an idled Toronto-area Stellantis facility. Roshel is chasing a Canadian military order for light utility vehicles and says, if it lands the work, it could quickly bring jobs back to the Brampton site. Unifor opposes the deal, telling Joly in a Wednesday letter it "should be met with fierce resistance from the federal government." Union President Lana Payne said Thursday that "strike action remains a real possibility," although the goal is still to secure a tentative agreement without walking out.
Brampton's future and the money on the line
Also Thursday morning, Stellantis told workers at Brampton, Ontario, it sees "no long-term business case" for building cars there. The plant hasn't turned out vehicles since late 2023. Ottawa previously provided Stellantis with hundreds of millions of dollars tied to production commitments. We need a new model.

Why this matters for your wallet
A contract deadline, a contested plant sale, and a reopened-or-refund ultimatum create real uncertainty around jobs and output at one of Canada's major auto hubs. If Brampton restarts or shifts to a new model, that can ripple into local employment, supplier activity, and regional demand. If it stalls or a strike happens, expect a different kind of ripple. Keep an eye on whether talks restart, how the Roshel pursuit of a military contract unfolds, and whether the government's leverage speeds up a resolution.
