Walter and Boehly near deal to sell Chelsea stakes to Clearlake

Summary:
  • Mark Walter and Todd Boehly are in advanced talks to sell their Chelsea FC stakes to majority owner Clearlake Capital, per people familiar.
  • Clearlake holds about 61.5% of the club and has sought a larger position for years, with earlier negotiations repeatedly snagging on price.
  • Walter's spokesperson says his piece would be valued above his cost, calling it another successful sports investment, and that he plans more sports-related bets after an exit.

Deal talks accelerate

Billionaires Mark Walter and Todd Boehly are closing in on a deal to unload their Chelsea Football Club interests to Clearlake Capital, according to people who asked not to be named because the talks are private. Negotiations have quickened in recent weeks, and the pair are positioned to walk away with a small gain, the people said.

Back in 2022, a group led by Clearlake and Boehly bought Chelsea from Roman Abramovich for about £2.5 billion, or $3.4 billion. As of today, Clearlake controls approximately 61.5% of the Premier League club, and Walter plus Boehly collectively have about 25%, according to Sportico.

Power, price, and a long courtship

Clearlake has long wanted a bigger slice of Chelsea, but on-and-off talks kept stalling on price. In September 2024, after disagreements over where to take the club next, Clearlake and Boehly started exploring whether one might buy out the other, after a stretch in which Boehly spearheaded significant outlays.

"This potential transaction values Mark Walter's stake in Chelsea Football Club at a premium to his initial investment and is another successful sports investment for him," a spokesperson for Walter said. "After this exit, Mr. Walter intends to make future sports-related investments." The spokesperson added, "Walter did not initiate the proposed transaction to sell his interest, which has been in the works for quite some time." Representatives for Boehly and for Clearlake declined to comment.

Why now: scrutiny around Walter, liquidity signals from Boehly

A federal review of Walter's businesses has pushed him to reshape parts of his portfolio, prompting deal talks across several holdings, including slices of his sports franchises. The US Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission are examining his broad business network, and authorities have not alleged wrongdoing by him or by his parent entity, TWG Global.

TWG later stated it is cooperating with authorities to answer their inquiries and reported that no investors have suffered harm. The group has also been pursuing multiple transactions to clean up the insurer balance sheets that drew scrutiny, and late last month stated it "is not looking to sell its sports assets at 'fire sale' prices."

Walter's activity extends beyond soccer. Last month, he reached an agreement to transfer the Los Angeles Lakers to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger at a record price of $12.5 billion. Boehly said on an Aug. 28 investor call, "I'm still working through that."

What it means for your money

If Clearlake increases its stake, decision making at Chelsea could be more streamlined after last year's split over strategy. The price tag matters too for anyone tracking private valuations in sports: the 2022 £2.5 billion purchase, Clearlake's current 61.5% holding, and a likely premium on Walter's portion set useful markers. The broader read is that trophy sports assets continue to command full prices even with regulatory questions and balance sheet fixes in the background, which can influence how pensions, insurers, and family offices value and trade their sports exposure.

US National Debt Hits $40 Trillion: Why the Economy Hasn't Collapsed Yet

Your 401k Is Fueling the AI Bubble

Why Is Everything So Expensive? Why Prices May Never Come Back Down
  • Official inflation is 3.4% and prices are up 32% since 2020, but rent (41%), gas (47%), car insurance (64%) and ground beef (79%) all outran the 28% median wage.
  • The Federal Reserve targets 2% inflation on purpose. Rising prices push extra dollars to investors and shrink the real cost of a $40 trillion national debt.
  • Investors who simply owned the S&P 500 gained about 150% over the same six years, and the Fed's September 16 decision will show whether it protects the dollar or the economy first.
