Nintendo fans have a new reason to smile, and so do the company's shareholders.
Here is what makes this interesting. When this Pokémon title was first revealed last September, analysts and fans did not expect much from it. The title looked like a side game, something smaller in the Pokémon universe rather than a mainline adventure.
That skepticism seems misplaced now.
The game's play style borrows heavily from Animal Crossing, one of Nintendo's most beloved franchises for the original Switch. That cozy, build-and-live formula appears to have clicked with players in a big way.
For a game that many wrote off as a minor release, that is a strong result.
Investors watch game sales closely for a simple reason. Popular games tend to push more Switch 2 hardware out the door, and the console has had a bumpy sales period.
The numbers show the struggle. During the June quarter, Switch 2 shipments came to 3.82 million units, a 34.4% year-over-year decline. Nintendo now projects 16.5 million Switch 2 units sold in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027, which would be below the prior year's level.
Part of the problem is cost. Memory chips got more expensive, and Nintendo raised Switch 2 pricing as a result. The console has been on sale for just over a year now, and the early momentum has cooled.
That makes every big game release matter more. Strong software can reignite interest in the hardware, which is why Thursday's announcement carried so much weight.
Nintendo also revealed expansion packs and gameplay updates for the new Pokémon game, a move aimed at bringing in new players and keeping existing ones engaged. The strategy is straightforward: keep the game fresh, keep the sales coming.
The company is betting on a strong lineup of upcoming releases to turn things around.
A remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is planned for Switch 2. The original came out in the late 1990s and is widely considered one of the greatest games ever made. A modern version could draw in both longtime fans and a new generation of players.
Nintendo also has two more Pokémon games coming in the next year, and both Pokémon and Zelda are among its most important series. New entries in both franchises could give the Switch 2 a significant boost.
Investors seem cautiously optimistic. Nintendo's shares are still down more than 16% for the year, but they have climbed more than 26% in the past month on hopes that these upcoming blockbusters will drive console sales.
The bottom line: The strong sales figures show that a well-made game can still break through, even when expectations are low. For Nintendo, the challenge now is turning that momentum into sustained hardware sales. If the Zelda remake and the new Pokémon titles deliver, the next year could look very different for the company and its investors.
