Anthropic's Finance Chief Courts Early Backers as Public Listing Nears

Published Aug 13, 2026

Summary:
  • Anthropic CFO Krishna Rao has begun exploratory meetings with investors ahead of a possible public listing.
  • The conversations have avoided specific financials or valuation, focusing instead on Claude, Claude Code, and enterprise positioning.
  • Anthropic reached a $965 billion valuation in late May, edging past the $852 billion OpenAI set in late March.

Early Meetings Look Like a Listening Tour

Anthropic is starting to act like a company that expects to go public. Chief financial officer Krishna Rao has been meeting with investors in the kind of open, exploratory conversations that happen before the real sales pitch begins.

So far, those conversations have stayed away from the money details. They have not covered specific financials or a valuation, according to people familiar with the matter.

Instead, investors are getting the full tour of the company story: the Claude AI model lineup, the Claude Code coding assistant, its spot in the enterprise market, its leadership, and the pace of new product releases. That is a smart way to test the market's appetite before making promises.

The Numbers Already Look Big

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by researchers and executives who left OpenAI, which is now its main rival. The two companies are close, but the money table is no now higher.

In late May, Anthropic edged out its former parent with a $965 billion valuation. That passes the $852 billion valuation that OpenAI set in late March.

The revenue numbers are starting to match the hype. Anthropic says its annualized run rate, which is what a full year would look like if the current month's pace kept up, has passed $47 billion. That is a big jump from the $10 billion in total revenue the company brought in during all of 2025.

Anthropic's confidential filing with the SEC in June marked a major milestone, though the company has not set a listing date. The early meetings, which have focused on the company's story rather than its financials, suggest executives are still in the early stages of the process.

Some outside investors, doing their own math, think Anthropic might try to list at $2 trillion or more. That number does not come from the company itself. The Financial Times was the first to report the speculation.

A Reminder That Public Markets Move Fast

Going public does not guarantee a smooth ride, and the market has fresh proof. SpaceX, which absorbed Musk's AI venture xAI earlier this year, made its Nasdaq debut in June. By Aug. 5, 2026, the stock had fallen roughly 38% from its intraday high, and that is the equivalent of about $9.1 billion in market value disappearing.

That matters because Anthropic could be in a similar spot. If it goes public later this year or in the future, its stock will be measured daily against all the private-market excitement. The lever is also the same one SpaceX knows: once shares can be bought, sold, and second-guessed, they can move in a way no private in nature does.

Investors would love a piece of the AI story, and anthropic is one of the most admired names in itThe real question is what happens after the anything. SpaceX has already shown that a big debut doesn't block a stop.

The Bottom Line for Your Portfolio

If Anthropic goes public, it could be one of the most watched listings in a long time. A formerly private company, valued close to a trillion dollars, becomes something you can trade from your own app.

That is a good thing for regular investors who want to participate in AI. They start out as nothing more than a number on a screen.

There is no exact date yet, so there is time to decide where it fits. Watch the revenue numbers, watch the official numbers, and watch what happens to other new, high-flying stocks in the meantime. The story is not just about Anthropic anymore. It is about whether these huge valuations can survive on a regular trading day.

The answer has never been guaranteed. But if the past few months are a sign, it will be a fascinating to watch.
