DeepSeek Forms an Agent Unit to Rival Claude's Turf

Summary:
  • Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has formed a new unit, the "DeepSeek Harness Team," to build AI agents capable of completing tasks autonomously rather than just answering questions.
  • The move directly targets products like Anthropic's Claude Code, entering the fast-growing race to build AI agents that can code, book travel, or manage spreadsheets independently.
  • Tencent has verified DeepSeek's new WeChat account for the unit, which is already posting job listings to build out the team.

A New Player in the AI Agent Race

AI assistants have gotten good at talking. The harder trick is getting them to actually do things, like writing code, booking a flight, or handling a spreadsheet, without a human supervising every step.

Those do-it-for-you programs are called AI agents, and that is the market DeepSeek is chasing.

Right now, most AI tools work like a helpful intern: they hand you an answer and wait for approval. Agents are the next step, more like an employee who takes the task and runs with it.

The Hangzhou-based startup has created an official WeChat account for its "DeepSeek Harness Team." It is already posting job ads for a new group built to develop AI agents that can rival products such as Anthropic's Claude Code, and Tencent, which runs the WeChat super-app, has verified the account.

A harness is the supporting software that surrounds a large language model, which serves as the engine for an AI. It is what lets an AI agent handle more complicated tasks and work on its own for longer stretches.

Think of the harness as the scaffolding that turns a chatty model into something that can get real work done. Anthropic and other companies use harnesses to make coding and other tasks flow more smoothly, and DeepSeek is clearly trying to match that capability.

What DeepSeek Is Building

On the evening of August 12, 2026, DeepSeek revealed via its official WeChat channel that the V4 Pro model now handles more complex agentic work independently. In simpler terms, the model can take on more complex jobs and do more on its own instead of just answering questions.

Around the same time, the company posted several job openings for harness-team positions. Another posting says the team's aim is to make DeepSeek's models capable of handling sophisticated tasks on their own.

Qichacha, a Chinese corporate database, says DeepSeek controls the Beijing-registered entity behind the page. That matches the official status Tencent gave the account, so this is not a fan page or a side experiment.

The timing is worth noting. The V4 Pro update and the hiring push landed at the same time, which suggests the harness team is already moving from planning into action.

DeepSeek did not reply to a request for comment after business hours. Chinese media including Jiemian reported earlier Wednesday that DeepSeek had opened the new account.

The Bigger Race Behind the Headlines

DeepSeek's move is part of a much bigger fight. Chinese companies and US developers are in a fierce race to build more advanced, cheaper AI tools.

OpenAI's ChatGPT ignited the global AI race, and that contest has only gotten faster since. Many firms have moved toward the profitable market for AI agents that automate business work.

The shift makes sense. Software that does work is easier to sell than software that just talks, and businesses are happy to pay for tools that save time.

More competition usually means better products and lower prices, and this race is bringing both. The companies that figure out how to build powerful agents without huge costs could end up powering a lot of everyday business software.

For regular people, the payoff is simpler. The AI you use at work or on your phone is about to become more independent, taking on longer tasks and making more decisions without you hovering.

Whoever wins this race, the people using these tools are likely to come out ahead. The next few years should be interesting to watch, and even more interesting to use.

Context

DeepSeek's move fits a broader pattern across the AI industry. OpenAI's ChatGPT showed how quickly a consumer product could spread, but the money is now shifting toward tools that do work. Anthropic's Claude Code is one of the best-known examples of an agentic product, and DeepSeek's new team is designed to compete with it. The fact that Tencent verified the account also matters: WeChat is the dominant app in China, and an official presence there gives DeepSeek a direct channel to developers and businesses.
