Anthropic Will Watermark AI Text Ahead of New EU Rules

Summary:
  • Anthropic will embed invisible watermarks in text from Claude, its API, Claude Code, Cowork, and Tag.
  • Files will carry C2PA provenance data so other systems can trace where they came from.
  • Models released after August 2 include the tag from the start, and older models will be updated.

Anthropic Is Adding a Digital Fingerprint to Its Models

The company laid out the change in a support page it recently updated, and it applies across the board: Claude itself, the platform API, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and Claude Tag.

Think of a watermark as a digital fingerprint baked into the words. You cannot see it, but software can.

It also survives copying and pasting, and it may survive some edits.

That matters because copy and paste is how most text moves around the web. The watermark is not just for text.

For files, Anthropic relies on C2PA, an open standard that lets other systems trace where a file came from. Any model that comes after August 2 will have the tag built in from the start, covering both text and files, and older models will get the same treatment.

One big question is still open: how much editing does it take to break the watermark? Anthropic has not said, and TechCrunch has asked for clarification.

The New EU Rule Behind the Move

Europe is the reason. For any company that wants to sell into the EU, that is a legal requirement, not a nice extra.

The idea is not to embarrass anyone or to punish writers who use AI. It is to make sure that when a machine creates content, the next machine in line can know that.

Anthropic is not alone in this. Black Forest Labs, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Synthesia have all committed to the same EU code.

Other platforms are moving on their own timeline. Suno will start marking tracks after legal issues, and Substack has partnered with Pangram to flag AI content.

Substack's CEO, Chris Best, even coined a term for AI content that shows up on the platform: "Claudefishing."

What Watermarks Mean for Your Money

What will change is the backdrop for AI companies. Building transparency into a product takes engineering time and money, and it adds a new layer of legal risk.

That means the companies in your portfolio are now being shaped by regulators as well as by technology.

For people who read online, the tag is a quiet change at first. Over time, it could make it easier to know whether a post, a review, or a reply was written by a person.

For investors, the bigger picture is that compliance is now a normal part of the AI business. It is a cost that shows up in how companies plan, what they build, and how they manage risk.

The August 2 deadline is the first real test of how the AI companies in your portfolio handle rules that are not going away.
