How AI Turned Bug Hunting Into an Assembly Line
Google's Chrome browser just had its busiest month ever for patching security holes - and the company says it has artificial intelligence to thank.
In June alone, the Chrome team fixed 1,072 vulnerabilities across two versions of the browser. That is more than the 1,036 bugs it patched in the entire 23 versions that came out over the previous two years combined. The jump is not a coincidence.
Google pointed its internal AI tools, specifically large language models like Gemini - the same kind of technology that powers chatbots - at the problem of finding security flaws. Doug Turner, Chrome's director of engineering, said the new approach has "fundamentally shifted the economics of cybersecurity, transforming vulnerability discovery into an automated, industrial-scale operation."
In plain English: instead of relying on humans to manually hunt for bugs, the AI now scans code constantly and flags weak spots. That means Google can fix problems before hackers even know they exist.
Microsoft Is Seeing the Same Trend, Apple Is Not
Google is not alone in this AI-powered bug blitz. Microsoft reported its own record in a single Patch Tuesday: 570 security fixes across its products in one month. The company also credited AI for helping it find and patch holes faster.

But not every tech giant is showing the same acceleration. Apple has addressed roughly 482 vulnerabilities this year (2026). That is roughly on pace with what it fixed last year, and it is roughly equal to what Apple fixed way back in 2015. No exponential jump, no AI-powered surge.
Cybersecurity experts had been predicting this shift for years. From the beginning of LLMs, experts cautioned that AI-based tools would uncover vulnerabilities at a rapidly growing rate, making it necessary for defenders to likewise employ AI to outpace attackers. That forecast is now becoming reality.
Google and Microsoft are proving that prediction right. Apple, at least from the numbers available, has not yet joined the race.
What This Means for Your Portfolio
For investors, the question is not whether AI can find bugs - it clearly can. The question is which companies are turning that ability into a real advantage.
Google's ability to fix more bugs in a single month than it used to fix in two years means Chrome is getting more secure, faster. That reduces the risk of a major breach that could damage user trust or cause costly outages. It also suggests Google is getting more efficiency out of its AI investments, which could show up in lower costs and fewer emergency patches down the road.
Microsoft's record-setting month tells a similar story. For investors in either company, the ability to stay ahead of attackers is a quiet but real competitive edge.
The catch: Apple's numbers are flat. That does not mean Apple is less secure - it could mean it is using a different approach or it simply has not deployed AI at the same scale. But in a world where hackers are also using AI to find bugs, falling behind on defense is a risk worth watching.
The takeaway: the same AI tools that are changing how companies build products are also changing how they protect them. For the companies that figure it out first, that could be a long-term advantage worth paying attention to.
