The world is running out of memory chips - the RAM that stores data inside everything from your phone to your truck.
Picture walking in to buy a laptop and finding the store doesn't have one, or the price has doubled, because there isn't enough memory to build it.
The world now needs more memory than at any point in history. The CEO of Micron, the biggest memory producer in the United States, says AI needs more memory, faster memory, and lower-power memory to get smarter.
For most people, that means the next iPhone, laptop, fridge, and truck will cost more. For investors, it means money is on the move, because companies and the Trump administration have been pouring cash into the problem.
Catching a move that size before the headlines do is the hard part, and it's what Jaspreet walks through at his free live investor workshop on September 29th.
Four Problems Are Pushing RAM Prices Up at Once
Four things are happening at the same time, and together they make a perfect storm.
AI Needs More Memory Than the Chips That Run It
Every question typed into ChatGPT or Claude has to be stored somewhere, and companies racing to replace human work with AI are storing more every day. That demand lands in data centers, and it is enormous.
According to Nvidia, the shortage has gotten bad enough that memory now costs more than the processors in the machines built to run AI.
The Industry Stopped Building Memory in 2023
From 2020 into early 2023, buying a car, a fridge, or a computer was hard because the pandemic shutdown broke the supply chain for chips and memory. By 2023 that shortage was fixed, so thoroughly that producers were sitting on a glut of extra inventory.
So they stopped producing. Three years later the shortage is back, and memory supply chains take years to rebuild.
New Supply Is Years Away
Building memory capacity generally takes years, so the factories that went quiet in 2023 can't fix this quickly.
When will RAM prices go down, then? The earliest anyone expects a fix is 2028, and even that is the optimistic case.
A Bombed Helium Plant in Qatar Made Everything Harder
The world has a limited supply of helium, and one of its biggest producers was a facility in Qatar that was attacked during the war in the Middle East. A big chunk of the global helium supply is now out of reach.
That puts a helium shortage on top of a memory shortage, because memory production needs helium to keep temperatures cold. Making memory just got harder and more expensive at the exact moment the world needs more of it.
The Last Two Supply Shocks Ended in Rate Hikes and a Market Drop
History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes, and the United States has been through two shocks like this one before.

The oil shock didn't act alone in 1973. Heavy money printing in the early 1970s was already feeding inflation, and the stock market drop that followed came from everything going on in the economy, not oil by itself.
The 2021 chip shortage made new cars very hard to build. For a while a car was a strange kind of investment: you could buy one, drive it around, and sell it for a profit as used car prices boomed.
Money printing in 2020 and 2021 pushed inflation to its highest level in decades, and the chip shortage wasn't the only reason the Fed had to move.
Now it's 2026, and memory is the thing running short. There is already talk of the Fed raising rates again to fight higher oil prices and inflation, and nobody knows yet what that does to stocks.
Higher RAM Prices Are Coming for Your Phone, Laptop, and Truck
Tim Cook, who has just retired as Apple's CEO, called the coming price increases "unavoidable." Apple tried to shield customers from the huge increases being passed along to it, he said, but the situation has become unsustainable.
Memory is inside the phone, the laptop, and the truck, so the same bill lands on all three at once.
Why Rising RAM Prices May Never Show Up in the Inflation Numbers
You might expect all of this to send the inflation rate skyrocketing. Not necessarily, because the government has some room to massage how inflation gets measured.
Inflation is tracked with the CPI, the Consumer Price Index, a basket of prices that includes electronics. More expensive electronics should make the number worse.
Instead, the government applies what's called a hedonic adjustment: this year's phone is more powerful than last year's, so the higher price buys more power instead of counting as inflation.
That is how some inflation reports over the last several years said phone prices fell. The same phone cost $300 more, and the report scored it as cheaper because the argument was that you were buying a more powerful phone.
You still pay more at the register, even if the official number never shows it.
Most of the World's Memory Comes From South Korea, Not America
This isn't only an American problem, and all eyes are now on South Korea. Two kinds of memory matter here: DRAM, the general type of memory chip, and high bandwidth memory, or HBM, the special kind AI runs on.

Demand for both is skyrocketing, but AI memory is skyrocketing fastest, and it's the one America makes least of.
That weak spot is where China enters the picture. China wants to overtake the United States as the world's economic superpower, and it sees memory as a place America is exposed.
So it has been investing heavily in its own chipmaking to compete with, and eventually overtake, the United States as a leading memory producer.
Washington Is Paying to Bring Memory Production Home
Money is pouring into this industry from two directions. Micron has been raising huge sums of money to make more memory chips in the United States.
The Trump administration is pushing from the other side, spending money and signing executive orders to rebuild the memory supply chain at home. For an investor, that's the part to watch, because any time money moves, it creates an opportunity.
