Tech investors are closely monitoring how a U.S. takeover of Greenland might impact critical minerals mining on the island. This interest has surged as the U.S. government ramps up discussions about acquiring the territory.
According to Tony Sage, CEO of Critical Metals Corp, the company has received numerous inquiries from investors about how this potential acquisition would affect its mining project in Greenland.
The White House is reportedly "actively" discussing an offer to buy Greenland, with the possibility of military action also being considered.
This comes ahead of important talks between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Danish officials. The geopolitical significance of Greenland has increased, with national security concerns driving U.S. interest.
Critical Metals Corp has seen its stock price soar by 116% since the beginning of 2026. The company is developing a project that focuses on extracting heavy rare earth elements (HREE), which are crucial for advanced technologies including electric vehicles (EVs) and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.
Sage noted that President Trump's comments about Greenland have generated additional buzz among investors.
Amaroq Mining, another company with projects in Greenland, has also reported increased attention from tech investors over the last year.
CEO Eldur Ólafsson mentioned that geopolitical tensions have brought critical mineral supply chains into focus, prompting more inquiries from potential investors.
Heavy rare earth elements are essential for various technologies, including defense systems and advanced electronics.
The significance of these minerals has been highlighted by the fact that China produced 70% of the world's rare earths in 2024. This dependency on Chinese supply has raised concerns among Western nations, as noted by industry experts.
While Critical Metals Corp has established strong relationships with both Greenland and U.S. governments, some experts remain skeptical about the ability of Greenland's minerals to significantly reduce Western reliance on China in the near future.
According to Tracy Hughes, founder of the Critical Minerals Institute, the process from exploration to actual mining involves many stages, and current projects in Greenland are still in the early phases.
