What's happening
Global investors are resurfacing in Vietnamese stocks just ahead of the FTSE Russell reclassification on Sept. 21. Net foreign buying has reached $54.2 million so far this week, putting it on course for the largest weekly tally in a month and a half. In August, Vietnam landed a larger-than-expected weight in FTSE Russell's semi-annual index review, a move seen as opening the door to billions in additional foreign inflows.
Why sentiment has shifted
A slowdown in overseas investor selling over the past few months has allowed the benchmark to wipe out its year-to-date decline. Even so, global funds are still net sellers on the year, pulling $3.5 billion from Vietnamese shares so far. Preceding this year's activity was a record withdrawal of $4.8 billion in 2025, when concerns over geopolitics and a tilt toward faster-growing markets cooled interest.
What to watch next
Index trackers tied to FTSE gauges are expected to put through orders later Friday as they align with Vietnam's new weight. "Foreign re-engagement in Vietnamese equities could build gradually as FTSE inclusion is phased in and market access improves," said Sufianti, a Singapore-based analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence.

Why it matters for your money
Near term, the swing factor is whether passive funds finish their buys and keep adding as the inclusion rolls out. If those flows build gradually and access keeps improving, it could reshape pricing and liquidity in Vietnam's market over the coming months. For anyone eyeing overseas exposure, the setup is shifting in real time.
