The numbers the agency released
The National Energy Administration posted the August figures on its WeChat account on Sunday. It reported total consumption of 1.033 trillion kilowatt-hours for August, which is above 1 trillion kilowatt-hours and up 1.7% from a year earlier.
Where demand grew
Industrial power use increased 2.7% year-on-year in August, and power for high-tech and equipment manufacturing climbed 7.2% year-on-year to 122.2 billion kilowatt-hours. Electricity used for vehicle charging and battery swaps jumped 51% year-on-year, and power for internet data services rose 38% year-on-year.
Peak strain on the grid
The monthly peak load reached 1.56 billion kilowatts, and that peak surpassed last year's peak on seven days in August. Those seven days indicate multiple instances when demand pushed above the previous year's highs.

What this means for your portfolio
August showed stronger demand in industry, high-tech manufacturing, vehicle charging and data services while residential use fell 4.0% year-on-year, a decline the agency linked to more frequent typhoons and heavier rain. These shifts in where electricity was used could affect parts of your portfolio connected to energy consumption and infrastructure, depending on your holdings.
