Bavarian Nordic taps Tarja Stenvall as CEO amid leadership reset

Bavarian Nordic said Thursday that Tarja Stenvall will take the helm on Oct. 15. The company described her as a former Sanofi executive with decades in big pharma, including roles at AstraZeneca Plc and Pfizer Inc. She steps in as the company refreshes its leadership bench.

Why Leadership Is Changing

Tarja Stenvall takes over from Paul Chaplin, whose planned exit had been disclosed earlier this year. In March, Bavarian Nordic said Chaplin would exit by the end of 2024 or when a successor was appointed, setting the stage for today's handoff.

Bavarian Nordic is widely known for its smallpox vaccine, which is also used to protect against mpox. The company secured several large government supply deals during the 2022 mpox outbreak and again in 2024. Not everything has gone its way, though: its respiratory syncytial virus program suffered a major failure in 2023.
