Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said the two governments are working toward Poland's first permanent American base, with room for around 10,000 US troops. He cast it as part of Poland's bid to firm up its defenses while the US rethinks how it stations forces across Europe. Sikorski added that the new facility would represent an increase from the approximately 7,000 US troops currently operating in Poland on a rotational basis.
"We want the kind of US presence that would reassure us, but not be threatening to Russia," he said at an event in New York. "We hope that President Trump keeps the promise that he has made to this effect to our president."
The concept dates back to 2018, when former President Andrzej Duda, predecessor to current President Karol Nawrocki, first pitched a permanent US base. In the wake of Russia's 2022 full-scale assault on Ukraine, Polish leaders ramped up their push to lock in a sustained American troop commitment.
Trump said last week that "major progress" is being made toward establishing a new base in Poland, reflecting his push for other NATO members to carry more of Europe's defense load.

This is playing out as European governments worry the US might scale back forces on the continent. Trump has told allies to take more responsibility for their own security, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has launched an assessment of the US forces stationed in Europe. Poland, among NATO's biggest defense spenders, has long pressed for a larger and more permanent American footprint. As Sikorski put it, "You cannot invade Russia with one brigade."
Nawrocki has cultivated a close rapport with Trump, and during Poland's 2025 presidential campaign, Trump publicly backed him. Politico first reported the base plan.
