GM Unveils 2027 Silverado and Sierra Engines as Detroit Truck Wars Heat Up

Published Sep 17, 2026

Summary:
  • GM detailed two new V-8s, a carryover inline-six diesel, and an enhanced turbo four for the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500.
  • V-8 momentum is building as the Trump administration moves to pull back EV incentives and soften fuel economy rules, while EV demand cools.
  • GM says the refreshed trucks and upgraded engines are built to extend six straight years of segment leadership.

GM Rolls Out New Engines for 2027 Trucks

Detroit sounds different again, and it is not quiet. General Motors said Thursday the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 will offer two new V-8 engines, a carryover inline-six diesel, and a strengthened turbocharged four-cylinder. GM is also leaning into a diesel it says is unique among full-size pickups.

Earlier this week, Ford Motor updated its engine lineup for the 2027 model year, and GM's news arrived in its wake. GM President Mark Reuss detailed the plan Wednesday at the Flint Engine plant near Detroit, calling the launch part of GM's sixth generation of Small Block V-8s, a lineage that began in 1955. Development of the Gen 6 engines started in 2018, long before recent regulatory shifts.

Reuss did not mince words about the goal. "That's the goal," he said. "That's what success looks like: continued truck leadership." GM executives said the updated powertrains and redesign are aimed at keeping its six-year run at the top of the full-size pickup segment over rivals including Ford and Stellantis.

Why V-8s Are Back in the Spotlight

The V-8 conversation is getting louder as the Trump administration moves to pull back EV incentives and soften fuel economy rules, while EV demand cools. Softer EV demand is another factor, especially for pickups where towing or hauling can cut range sharply.

Even as hybrids surge this year, pickups are the outlier. There are fewer hybrid choices, and Toyota Motor reports that 18.7% of Tundra sales this year are hybrids. Reuss argued the diesel checks boxes customers care about. "No one has the efficiency on a diesel that we have," he said.

Buyers are voting with their wallets. So far this year, 55% of Silverado 1500 buyers chose V-8s, as did roughly 61% of Sierra 1500 buyers. The 3.0-liter TurboMax diesel represents about 35% of Silverado 1500 sales and 20% of Sierra 1500 sales.

The 2027 Truck Battle Gets Real

The 2027 model year ushers in the latest round of truck wars between GM, Ford, and Stellantis, with competitive pressure and attention spiking whenever one of them unveils new or redesigned full-size pickups - like GM is doing for 2027. Offering perspective, Stephanie Brinley, an associate director leading AutoIntelligence at Mobility Global, said, "Full-size pickup trucks are crucial for the three companies, without any doubt." She also noted, "Part of the reason that we have the truck wars cadence that we do is simply because products get refreshed so often."

This round leans hard into eight cylinders. After Ram replaced the Hemi V-8 with a more efficient inline-six, sales fell enough that the brand said last year it would bring the Hemi back, though availability remains tight. "Ram showed that you can lose buyers by not having [V-8 engines] available," Brinley said. "Part of it is because of that expectation that there is something that the V-8 is better at."

Ram has also timed its performance entries: the Rumble Bee with the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 is expected to be available beginning in late 2026, with the Rumble Bee 392 and Rumble Bee SRT following in the first half of 2027.

Sales, Risks, and What to Watch

This market is where the money is. Full-size pickups have ruled U.S. new-vehicle sales for decades, with Ford's F-Series saying it has been the top-selling vehicle since 1981. Silverado typically takes second, Ram is close behind, and Sierra often lands in the top 10.

Ford still leads with the single F-Series nameplate, but since 2020 the combined sales of Chevrolet and GMC have topped Ford. Profits are enormous. Ford has said F-Series revenue beats that of many Fortune 100 companies, cash that helps fund future tech and offset EV losses.

Loyalty runs deep here. Mobility Global, formerly S&P Global Mobility, reported last year that the Silverado 1500, F-150, and Ram 1500 consistently place near the top for brand loyalty among U.S. models, though it can dip with lineup changes or recalls.

Quality is another watch item. GM's new V-8s will also power its full-size SUVs as the company continues to address issues with some current-generation engines. Following the recall and subsequent remedies, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched a probe into GM's 6.2-liter V-8 due to ongoing failures. Norman Peralta, GM's executive chief engineer responsible for engines and battery systems globally, stated that the company is working with NHTSA and is "very confident" the redesigned engines won't encounter the same problems.

In the year's first six months, Sierra sales were unchanged from a year earlier, Silverado slipped 4.6%, Ram climbed 19%, and F-Series dropped 13% following supplier fires. GM has gained ground on Ford as those disruptions lingered.

Bottom line for your wallet: these trucks help decide which brands keep the cash flowing, who stumbles, and who bankrolls the next big bet. If you depend on a truck for work or lifestyle, the 2027 updates tell you where capability, efficiency, and availability are heading.

Treasury Yields Are Spiking Because Lenders Are Backing Away From U.S. Debt
  • The U.S. is paying its highest 30-year borrowing rate in about two decades because its biggest lenders, the Fed, foreign governments, and banks, are all pulling back from Treasuries.
  • Every mortgage, car loan, credit card, and business loan is priced off the 10-year Treasury yield, so when Washington pays more to borrow, so do you.
  • With about $40 trillion of debt against a $32 trillion economy, the country either outgrows its debt or slides into a doom loop, and investors need a plan for both.

Fiat Currency Runs on Trust, and the World Just Stopped Trusting the Dollar
  • Gold has overtaken US treasuries as the world's top reserve asset, and central banks are now buying less US debt and more gold.
  • The US dollar is a fiat currency, meaning it's backed by a promise rather than gold, so it loses value when fewer countries want to hold it.
  • Whether the US economy or its national debt grows faster from here decides which assets stand to benefit next.

Why RAM Prices Are Soaring - and Where the Money Is Moving
  • Memory chips - the RAM inside phones, laptops, fridges, and trucks - are in a shortage Tim Cook called a 100-year flood, and some memory prices have climbed about 90% in a single quarter.
  • Four forces hit at once: AI demand, a production shutdown in 2023, build times that push any fix to 2028 at the earliest, and a bombed helium plant in Qatar.
  • The last two supply shocks ended in aggressive Fed rate hikes and market drops of around 45% and 20%, and this time Washington is spending heavily to bring memory production home.

How Is the Economy Doing? Washington Says It's Fixed, but the Numbers Don't Agree
  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the economy is fixed because lower earners' incomes are now rising faster than top earners'.
  • The Atlanta Fed and Bank of America show different numbers, and Hilton, Marriott, and McDonald's can't agree on what they're seeing either.
  • Whichever side is right, the economy is built to make investors rich, and inflation is how it does it.

US National Debt Hits $40 Trillion: Why the Economy Hasn't Collapsed Yet
  • The US national debt crossed $40 trillion in 2026 and is growing faster than the economy. The debt to GDP ratio now sits at 125%, the highest outside the pandemic and higher than World War II.
  • On September 9, 2026, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent rolled out an emergency plan for the government to lend money to itself. Ray Dalio now says the dollar has roughly three years before real pain.
  • Empires rarely default. They debase. Since 1971, median household income grew about 8x while houses grew 17x and the S&P 500 grew 360x, so investors got richer while workers fell behind.

Your 401k Is Fueling the AI Bubble
  • About $10 trillion of 401k money sits in a $77 trillion stock market, mostly through target date funds and S&P 500 funds. Roughly 30% of every S&P 500 dollar lands in five AI-heavy tech stocks.
  • Four bubble signals run hotter today than before the 2000 crash: top-ten concentration, tech's share of the index, the Buffett Indicator, and how much of the market index funds own.
  • You only lock in an AI bubble loss if you sell. The 2022, 2020, 2008, and 2000 crashes were all buying windows for long-term investors, and the US-China AI race means government money could keep flowing in.

What Is Wealth Preservation? How To Protect Your Money From Anything

Why Is Everything So Expensive? Why Prices May Never Come Back Down
  • Official inflation is 3.4% and prices are up 32% since 2020, but rent (41%), gas (47%), car insurance (64%) and ground beef (79%) all outran the 28% median wage.
  • The Federal Reserve targets 2% inflation on purpose. Rising prices push extra dollars to investors and shrink the real cost of a $40 trillion national debt.
  • Investors who simply owned the S&P 500 gained about 150% over the same six years, and the Fed's September 16 decision will show whether it protects the dollar or the economy first.
