Why small defense companies are having a moment
After "over 30 years of over-consolidation" that left a few giants and "a hollowing out of the middle," Fujiyama told Bloomberg TV there is now "a real deep ecosystem with small, innovative companies." He has followed the sector for almost three decades and says the U.S. government is actively pulling in private players, with the Trump administration showing "renewed openness" to public-private partnerships and to using commercially available defense tech. He called it a "freshness in the dialogue" that had been missing.
What Carlyle has put in motion
Carlyle rolled out a fund in May dedicated to supporting and developing smaller defense firms. July brought news from the firm that it would acquire Secturion Systems, a company that makes encryption gear to military specifications. Financial details were not made public. In August, another transaction saw Carlyle at the helm of a $1 billion Series C raise for Castelion, a firm working on a low-cost hypersonic missile.
What the deal stats say
Fujiyama's snapshot of the past six months: "the number of deals done in the aerospace defense sector from an M&A perspective is up 140%, but the average size is down 60%." In his words, "There's a lot happening at the lower end of the market." He also noted the Pentagon's push for partnerships is partly a response to the war with Iran, which has drained some key U.S. stockpiles.

What this means for your portfolio
The pattern is clear: Carlyle launched a fund to nurture smaller defense businesses and followed up with announced deals in encryption and hypersonic systems. That lines up with a market tilting toward more, smaller transactions as government demand meets a wider field of innovators. If you've wondered where growth might show up next, watch the smaller contractors solving urgent, practical problems.
