BC Partners eyes sale of United Group's Croatia arm to jump-start broader exit plans

Published Oct 9, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • BC Partners is exploring a sale of United Group BV's Croatian unit as an opening move to revive a wider sale of the telecom operator.
  • JPMorgan Chase & Co. is advising, and investors are already being sounded out.
  • The asset may be priced near €700 million ($784 million) on roughly €100 million of earnings.

What's happening

BC Partners is prepping a potential divestment of United Group's operations in Croatia to reset efforts to sell the wider business, according to people familiar with the matter who asked not to be named. A formal sale process is slated to kick off this month and is expected to attract interest from other private equity bidders.

Early indications suggest the Croatian business could change hands for around €700 million, anchored to earnings of about €100 million.

Who's circling

The buyout firm has tapped JPMorgan Chase & Co. and begun gauging demand for the asset. BC Partners' representative said the firm had no comment, while JPMorgan did not immediately answer a request for comment.

United Group runs telecom and media services across southeast Europe. In Croatia it operates as Telemach Croatia, offering mobile and fixed broadband following United Group's purchase of Tele2 Croatia.

The bigger picture

BC Partners bought a majority stake in United Group in 2019 from KKR & Co., which still holds a small stake. In 2024, Bloomberg News reported the firm weighed selling the entire company, but bidders zeroed in on select markets and the plan was ultimately shelved. Discussions are still fluid, and BC Partners could opt to keep the Croatian asset for longer.

For your money, the outcome here is a live read on how buyers value cash-generating telecom networks in smaller European markets. A strong price would hint at healthy appetite for carve outs in the region, while a pause would signal a market still picking its spots.

Telecom consolidation across Europe keeps redrawing the map. Get the free Market Briefs daily newsletter and follow the deal.

Is a Recession Coming? What the Last Five Rate Hiking Cycles Say
  • The Fed has started raising rates again, and in the last five hiking cycles going back to 1994, a recession never started while the hikes were underway.
  • The pain showed up where there was a bubble to pop - housing in 2008, dot-coms in 2000, the pandemic money-printing boom in 2022 - and usually after the hikes ended.
  • Private equity and private credit are feeling this cycle first, and how far the pain spreads depends on how high rates go and how long they stay there.

Housing Market 2026: Why Office Buildings Are Cracking Before Houses Do
  • Office buildings are selling for 80% to 95% off because their five-year loans are resetting at much higher rates while half-empty floors have gutted the income those buildings are valued on.

Dividend Investing vs. Growth Investing: Why the Slower Portfolio Can End Up Bigger
  • "What stock should I buy?" is the wrong first question. Growth, income, or wealth preservation comes first, and the goal changes which stocks even make sense.
  • At $500 a month for 30 years, 13% growth builds about $1.75 million. 10% growth plus a reinvested 4% dividend builds a little more than $2.2 million and pays a little more than $80,000 a year.
  • Income investors have US dividend ETFs, REITs, and international dividend funds to study. Growth investors have the Nasdaq 100, AI and chip funds, and small caps. None of it is a recommendation.
