Traders lift odds of a Tesla SpaceX tie up past 50% after Barclays pitch

Published Oct 16, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Barclays outlined how a Tesla SpaceX merger might work and said an announcement could come before Tesla's annual meeting, which must occur by Dec. 6, 2026.
  • A prediction market moved the chance of a merger by early 2027 above 50%, with the "before March" line jumping to 56% from 29%; April and May timelines rose to similar levels.
  • Evercore ISI on Friday told clients to buy SpaceX ahead of its early November earnings and raised its 12 month target by 20% to $275.

What Barclays is floating

Barclays on Wednesday mapped out a potential Tesla SpaceX combination and framed the pitch around vertical integration. Analyst Dan Levy said, "Notably, while we suspect there would be some financial synergies, the true value would be in vertical integration." He suggested an AI story tying Tesla's Robotaxi and Optimus to SpaceX's Grok and Macrohard, and added that Terafab - a chip program that leans on Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI - might be a "key driver." Barclays added that a deal could be announced before Tesla's next annual general meeting, which must be held no later than Dec. 6, 2026.

How betting markets moved

Traders responded quickly on a contract that asks, "When will Tesla and SpaceX merge?", which resolves based on news reports and the SEC's EDGAR database. Odds of an integration by early 2027 pushed above 50%, and by Friday morning the "before March" contract climbed to 56% from 29% earlier in the week. Contracts tied to April and May rose to roughly the same neighborhood.

Why the chatter has fuel

The companies already have a history of working together. Tesla, known for EVs, and SpaceX, the rocket and satellite player, are both controlled by Elon Musk. On Thursday, Tesla showed its long delayed Roadster using SpaceX technology to make the car hover, with the demo video recorded at SpaceX's Texas test site. On Tesla's latest earnings call, Musk said there is "more and more overlap" between the two.

What it means for your portfolio

Analysts are positioning around the momentum. In early trading Friday, Evercore ISI urged clients to purchase SpaceX stock before the company's next planned earnings report in early November, and lifted its 12 month price objective by 20% to $275. If speculation continues, expect market odds and analyst targets to be key indicators to watch.

How to Tell an Asset From a Liability: The One Question to Ask Before You Buy Anything
  • The typical American household earned more in 2025 than in any year on record, yet only 30% of Americans say they could pay a surprise $1,000 bill from savings, so the problem isn't income but what the income gets spent on.
  • An asset puts money in your pocket and a liability takes money out, and the wealthy buy assets first, then let the assets pay for the fun stuff.
  • Before you buy anything, ask one question: does this put money in my pocket, or take money out of my pocket? Then you need a plan for the money you keep.

How to Build Your First $2,000 Emergency Fund and Wipe Out Every Debt Over 10%

  • More than a third of American adults couldn't cover a $400 surprise bill with cash or savings, according to the Federal Reserve, and that's how one bad day turns into years of credit card payments.
  • Once the $2,000 is there, attack every debt charging more than 10% interest, highest rate first, because you can't out-invest a 22% credit card so paying it off is the investment.
