That early win helped calm nerves around demand for chips after a rocky stretch sparked by calls to slow AI development. Oil also weakened as traders reacted to signs of potential diplomacy around the Iran war, which further encouraged risk-taking.
Sector moves and drivers
Chipmakers led the charge. Early in the session, Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Hynix Inc. each gained about 3.5%, while Taiwan's Taiex hit a record after rising 1.8%. In the U.S., the Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index rose 4.3% - its biggest advance since Aug. 4 - while Meta jumped 11%.

Why it matters
The AI trade had been under pressure from lofty valuations and high-profile warnings about the existential risks of advanced models. According to Kyle Rodda of Capital.com, who serves as a senior analyst, "The sharp rally in the tech trade shows that the AI trade never really went away." He also noted that a meeting later this week of President Donald Trump with Chinese leader Xi Jinping might provide an additional lift.
