What Consob asked for
Italy's securities regulator, Consob, wants Ferretti to provide the analysis underpinning its conclusion that, at midyear, there were no signs pointing to asset impairment and therefore no impairment test was required. In the letter dated Sept. 10, the regulator flagged softer orders and trimmed guidance as elements that should be weighed in the assessment. Consob also requested up-to-date order numbers - highlighting any cancellations, suspensions, or delays - and, in a separate point, asked for details on distribution deals in the United Arab Emirates. Spokespeople for Ferretti and for Consob said they had no comment.
The company's read on the slowdown
In its late July update, the company behind the Riva and Pershing brands reported a 27% drop in first-half orders compared with a year earlier, attributing the slide to tougher competition and buyers taking longer to commit. According to Chief Executive Officer Stassi Anastassov, the issue is primarily commercial rather than financial, and the firm said net cash was €95 million ($106 million) at the end of June. Ferretti said in its July earnings release that holdups in finalizing contracts in the Middle East were linked to geopolitical tensions.
Bigger picture for the business
Ferretti ranks among Italy's leading yachtmakers, with brands including Riva, Pershing and Wally. Headquartered in Forlì by the Adriatic coast, the company operates seven shipyards in Italy and serves buyers in more than 70 countries, from smaller motor yachts to bespoke superyachts. A management reshuffle took place in May, following a board-control vote won by its largest shareholder, China's Weichai Group.
In June, Bloomberg said Ferretti was considering a possible bid for troubled competitor The Italian Sea Group. This year the shares have slipped about 5%, putting the company's market value just under €1 billion.
