Those bright white jet trails are more than sky doodles. Google says contrails account for about one third of aviation's climate impact because they trap heat much like thin cirrus clouds. In operational tests run in late 2025, Cathay crews used Google's guidance to sidestep the layers of air where contrails tend to form, and the companies reported Monday that the pilot project cut the warming impact by 40%.
How the system works
Contrails form when ice crystals cling to particles in engine exhaust at high altitude. Google's approach takes predictive AI, satellite imagery and meteorological inputs and turns them into flight-friendly suggestions, primarily modest altitude shifts similar to what pilots already do to avoid turbulence. For now, Google is offering the capability at no charge.

In the Asia Pacific region, Google's initial airline collaborator on AI-driven contrail mitigation is Cathay, which is also the earliest carrier globally to trial contrail avoidance on ultra-long haul flights. Google has run similar trials with American Airlines Group Inc.
"Our partnership with Google brings together the best of technology and operational expertise, demonstrating how data, AI and innovation can be applied to solve real-world challenges at scale," Lawrence Fong, Cathay's director of digital and information technology, said in a joint statement.

"This climate lever is available to the aviation industry for their existing aircraft fleet and any type of fuel they use currently," Kemal Armada, the project manager leading Google's Zurich-based contrail research, said in an interview. "It's extremely low-cost and effective." He added that a well-timed, slight altitude change can stop the development of clouds that would otherwise remain for hours, though scaling up will mean working through regulatory rules, airspace limits and airlines' safety and cost considerations.
Starting this week, the expanded second phase of trials will run across Cathay's polar, transpacific and intra-Asia networks. The aim is to build a bigger operational data set to pinpoint where contrail avoidance helps most on ultra-long haul services, and where it does not.

If airlines can trim a large chunk of their climate footprint simply by flying a bit higher or lower with existing aircraft and fuels, that could be one of the cheaper ways to make flying greener without waiting for new planes or fuels to scale.
