President Trump added a new weapon to his trade arsenal on Wednesday - and this time it's aimed at anyone arming Iran.
In a post, Trump said any country caught selling arms to Iran would face 50% tariffs on "any and all goods" sold to the U.S. He said the fee would start "right away" with no breaks.
The tariff threat came the same day as the ceasefire. Trump saw it as part of a bigger push. Not just to stop the war, but to change the ties.
In other posts, Trump said the U.S. would "work closely" with Iran and "no uranium will be enriched." He said many of the 15 points in the U.S. peace plan are already agreed to. But no formal copy has been shared.
The U.S. and Iran will also discuss tariffs and sanctions relief, Trump added.
This isn't new. The Supreme Court struck down most of Trump's "balanced" tariffs in Feb 2025. But the White House rebuilt its tariff plan using old trade laws.
Metals face a 50% tariff. Steel, aluminum, and copper are all covered. Starting in late July, big drug makers will face 100% tariffs on patented drugs.
The 50% arms tariff is broad. It doesn't name certain countries. That gives the White House room to move - but also creates doubt for trade partners who might get hit.
If the ceasefire breaks, this could be more than a threat.
