Summary:
  • Trump announced plans to "permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries"
  • President will cancel all federal benefits for noncitizens, denaturalize certain migrants
  • Announcement follows fatal shooting of National Guard member by Afghan national near White House

The Announcement

President Trump announced sweeping plans Thursday to tighten immigration rules. He plans to suspend migration from "Third World Countries" and cancel all federal benefits and subsidies to noncitizens in the country.

In Truth Social posts late Thursday night, Trump said he would "permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries to allow the U.S. system to fully recover." He didn't specify what would be considered a "third world" country. The term loosely refers to countries with higher poverty rates and economic instability.

The Plans

Trump said he would terminate "millions" of admissions under his predecessor Joe Biden. He plans to remove "anyone who is not a net asset to the United States, or is incapable of loving our Country."

Trump added he plans to end all federal benefits and subsidies for noncitizens. He'll "denaturalize migrants who undermine domestic tranquility" and deport any foreign national he described as a "public charge, security risk, or non-compatible with Western Civilization."

The Shooting

His comments came after two National Guard members were shot near the White House on Wednesday. One died from her injuries a day later.

Investigators said the attack was carried out by an Afghan national.

The Agency Response

Hours after the shooting, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services director Joseph Edlow said the agency would review every immigrant holding a Green Card from a "country of concern."

The agency also announced the immediate and indefinite suspension of all immigration requests involving Afghan nationals.

The Broader Agenda

Trump has pursued an aggressive immigration agenda since returning to the White House earlier this year.

In June, he announced a broad travel ban covering immigrants from 19 countries, including Afghanistan.

The Bottom Line

Trump announced sweeping immigration restrictions following the fatal shooting of a National Guard member by an Afghan national, planning to suspend migration from undefined "Third World Countries" and cancel all federal benefits for noncitizens while denaturalizing certain migrants.
