Summary:
  • Toyota recalling 73,000 Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles from 2023-2025 model years.
  • Vehicles don't emit enough warning sound while reversing, creating pedestrian safety risk flagged by NHTSA.
  • Free OBD-II software fix available at dealers; owner notifications start by May 30, 2026.

Toyota is recalling 73,000 Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles from 2023 to 2025. They don't make enough noise when backing up, so pedestrians can't hear them coming.

Federal Rules Require Backup Sounds

Federal law requires electric and hybrid vehicles to emit warning sounds at low speeds. These Corolla Cross Hybrids fell short of that standard while in reverse. NHTSA flagged the safety issue.

The Fix Is Free and Quick

Dealers will update the software through an OBD-II diagnostic port at no charge. The process takes minutes. Owner notifications begin by May 30, 2026.

What to Watch

Watch whether Toyota reports any pedestrian incidents involving these vehicles and whether other hybrid makers face similar recalls.
