Deal Details
Azim Premji's family office is putting 10 billion rupees into Vegafin Capital Pvt., a business lending startup. A Wednesday statement said the capital will be used to build an AI-driven lending platform aimed at micro, small, and medium enterprises.
The transaction also entails buying Gurugram-based Bizloan, a fintech that runs more than 35 branches across the country and maintains a $25 million loan book.
Who's Involved
Participants in the round include Norwest, based in Menlo Park, California, and India's Lok Capital. The raise adds to Premji Invest's roughly $15 billion portfolio spanning artificial intelligence and financial services.
This fits a broader pattern: India's family offices and angel investors are showing greater willingness to fund homegrown AI-centric companies, even as the country trails the US and China in AI investment.

Founder and Strategy
Vegafin's founder Bijith Bhaskar previously served as a partner at Premji Invest and worked for more than 20 years at ICICI Bank Ltd. in retail and digital-banking roles. In the statement, Bhaskar said the goal is to apply AI and pull data from many sources to assess small-business credit risk more quickly and with greater detail and accuracy.
The Bottom Line
Premji, who founded Wipro Ltd., is worth $25.1 billion, the Bloomberg Billionaires Index reports. In June, his family office took part in a $27 million raise backing Pramaana Labs, an AI verification platform. Premji Invest's global AI holdings, per Tracxn Technologies Ltd., include Databricks, Canva, Spotdraft and Writer, while domestic financial investments include Dezerv, KreditBee, Smallcase and the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd.
For your portfolio, the signal is clear: large, patient capital in India is leaning into AI-infused lending and fintech infrastructure, pairing domain expertise with data to chase underpenetrated small-business credit.
