Google's AI Search Overhaul Just Sent DuckDuckGo Installs Up 30%

Published May 28, 2026

Summary:
  • DuckDuckGo US app installs jumped 30.5% week-over-week on May 25.
  • iOS install growth peaked at 69.9% week-over-week in the same window.
  • A third-party data firm confirmed a 29% rise in US daily downloads.

For 20 years, Google made it hard to leave. DuckDuckGo never cracked more than about 2% of US search, per TechCrunch.

Then Google rolled out its biggest search update in two decades. AI was baked into the default.

Within a week, DuckDuckGo installs were spiking.

The Numbers

DuckDuckGo said US app installs grew 18.1% week-over-week on average. That was between May 20 and May 25.

Growth peaked at 30.5% on May 25. iOS installs ran even hotter.

They averaged 33% week-over-week. And peaked at 69.9%.

Apptopia, a third-party data firm, confirmed the trend. Its data showed a 29% jump in US daily downloads.

It also showed a 12% rise in global downloads. Even DuckDuckGo's AI-free search page saw traffic climb.

Visits to noai.duckduckgo.com averaged 22.7% week-over-week growth. They peaked at 27.7% on May 24.

The growth also held over Memorial Day weekend. That's a stretch when traffic usually dips.

Why Now

At its annual dev event, Google said the search box will get more chat-like. AI Overviews will answer questions first.

AI Mode will let users ask follow-ups inside the result. A Google rep noted that AI Mode is not the default.

The firm said AI Overviews have been around for two years. Google also pointed to a blog post from VP of Search Elizabeth Reid.

She said AI Mode has crossed one billion monthly users. DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg fired back in a Tuesday statement.

"Google is force-feeding AI with no way to opt out." Kamyl Bazbaz, the firm's chief comms and policy officer, kept it shorter.

"People just want a choice," he said.

What To Watch

A 30% spike in app installs is small in absolute terms. DuckDuckGo is still a fraction of Google's market.

But this is the first time in years that Google has handed a rival a real opening. The bigger pressure is on Google's own AI infrastructure spend.

Every AI-powered query costs real money to serve. A user who switches to a smaller engine is a user who doesn't see Google's ads.

The same goes for users who try its privacy-first Duck.ai chatbot.

Duck.ai is free and doesn't ask for an account. It also runs models from Anthropic, Meta, Mistral, and OpenAI.

The chats stay private because DuckDuckGo strips the user's IP before requests go out. It also deletes chats within 30 days.

That's a real opt-out from the AI default Google just made the standard. Google still owns the search market.

The question is whether this is the first real crack. Most past defection waves have faded fast.

This one is set up by Google's own product change. That's a new thing.

America Is Running Out of Debt Buyers. Treasury Bills Are the Government's Fix
  • The government took in about $5 trillion in taxes in 2025 and spent about $7 trillion, and the national debt is now over $40 trillion.
  • Investors, banks, and foreign countries are all lending less to the U.S., so starting September 9 the government plans to sell more short-term treasury bills and use that cash to buy back its long-term debt.
  • Government interest rates set the floor for your mortgage, your car loan, and your credit card, and short-term Treasury ETFs like SGOV are one way investors are playing it.

  • Guideline is a company that provides low-cost 401k plans, popular with small businesses and their employees.
  • A "Guideline 401k" follows the same core rules as any 401k: tax-advantaged growth, contribution limits, and often an employer match.
  • The biggest results come from capturing the full match, choosing low-cost funds, and picking Roth or traditional to fit your situation.

Principal 401k: What to Know About Your Plan
  • Principal is one of many companies that manage workplace 401k plans, so a "Principal 401k" is simply a 401k where Principal is the provider.
  • The rules of a 401k are the same no matter who runs it: pre-tax or Roth contributions, tax-advantaged growth, and often an employer match.
  • The biggest wins come from grabbing the full match, picking low-cost funds, and knowing whether Roth or traditional fits you.

What a Tariff Dividend Means for Your Money
  • A "tariff dividend" is the idea of taking money the government collects from tariffs and paying some of it back to citizens.
  • To judge the idea, you first need to know what a tariff is: a tax on imported goods, usually paid by the companies bringing them in.
  • Tariffs ripple through prices, businesses, and your investments, so the smart move is understanding those ripples, not just the headline.

No Tax on Overtime: How Overtime Pay Is Taxed
  • "No tax on overtime" refers to a tax break that lets certain workers deduct some overtime pay, lowering the income they get taxed on.
  • A deduction does not mean overtime is truly tax-free. It means part of that pay is subtracted before your tax is figured.
  • The bigger money lesson: how you earn money changes how it is taxed, and investors often get the friendliest treatment of all.

Reading the Silver Price Forecast for 2026
  • Nobody can honestly promise a specific silver price for 2026. Any exact number is a guess, so treat forecasts as opinions, not facts.
  • Silver is unusual because it is both a precious metal and an industrial metal, so its price answers to two very different forces.
  • Instead of chasing a forecast, learn the drivers - inflation, interest rates, recession fear, and industrial demand - so you can judge any prediction yourself.

Why Is Bitcoin Dropping Right Now?
  • Bitcoin drops for a mix of reasons: interest rates, big-picture money policy, regulation news, and simple shifts in how much risk investors want to take.
  • Bitcoin has a fixed supply and no earnings, so its price runs almost entirely on supply, demand, and sentiment.
  • Sharp drops are normal for bitcoin. Understanding the drivers matters more than reacting to any single day.
