The launch and where it sits
Mercedes introduced the AMG GT SUV as the first SUV engineered entirely by AMG rather than a higher spec Mercedes variant. The entry model is priced at €113,050 ($127,060) and goes on sale on Tuesday, with two higher end versions following in spring. The aim is clear: lean on speed and theatrics to win luxury buyers.
At the Stuttgart launch, Mathias Geisen, who oversees Sales & Customer Experience as a board member, said, "It's no secret that the top-of-the-line vehicles contribute disproportionately to our profitability."
Powertrain, performance and rivals
The GT SUV uses three axial-flux motors and an 800 volt battery system that can produce up to 1,169 horsepower. Range depends on trim, with the base rated up to 668 kilometers (415 miles) and upper variants reaching 700 kilometers per charge. The quickest version sprints from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 2.5 seconds.
Its bullseye includes Porsche AG's electric Cayenne, a model that debuted last November, and it also goes head-to-head with a wave of newly launched electric SUVs, such as Jaguar Land Rover's debut electric Range Rover and Bentley Motors Ltd. from Volkswagen AG.

Production, sales backdrop and why it matters for your portfolio
Following the AMG GT 4-Door Coupé introduced earlier this year, the GT SUV is the second model on AMG's dedicated electric platform, with production slated for Mercedes' Sindelfingen plant. It arrives amid a broader rollout of 40 new or updated models by 2027, many focused on the brand's most expensive segments.
Mercedes said battery EV deliveries set a third quarter record, up 61%, even as total car sales fell. Electric counterparts to the CLA and GLC have sold so well that European allocations are booked through the end of 2026. In China, overall sales dropped by more than 30% in the quarter, though demand for a GLC variant designed for local buyers is "better than expected," according to Geisen. If growth in Europe and the US persists, he added, "we will likely report our highest sales outside of China since 2019 toward the end of the year."
The bottom line: a high priced, high performance EV gives Mercedes another lever to support margins while volumes wobble. For portfolios, track the mix shift to premium models, whether EV momentum in Europe and the US holds, and signs that China's localized GLC is cushioning that market.
