Xbox Will Cap Game Pass Cloud Streaming Hours, Let Users Buy More

Summary:
  • Xbox will set monthly caps on cloud gaming time for Game Pass members starting in November.
  • Game Pass Ultimate subscribers at $22.99 per month get 15 hours, Premium at $14.99 get 10 hours, and Essential at $9.99 get 5 hours, with extra hours available to buy.
  • Xbox said the move responds to rising costs as more people stream and play longer, and noted Microsoft is exploring usage-based billing similar to GitHub Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot.

What changed and when

Xbox said it will end unrestricted cloud streaming for Game Pass members and introduce monthly limits starting in November. The company added subscribers will have the option to purchase additional streaming hours beyond those monthly caps.

Who gets what and price points

Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, priced at $22.99 per month, will receive 15 hours of cloud gaming each month. Game Pass Premium members, priced at $14.99 per month, will receive 10 hours each month, and Game Pass Essential subscribers, priced at $9.99 per month, will receive 5 hours each month.

Why Xbox says it is doing this

"We're introducing this model because the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer," Xbox said in a blog post. "Moving to monthly limits allows us to keep offering the service while continuing to invest in its reliability and performance. We understand that for some players the practical result is a higher cost." Microsoft executives are planning ways to bill customers to match rising operational costs, and the company said demand is increasing for its limited pool of computing resources. It noted customers of AI services such as GitHub Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot are increasingly charged according to how much they use those services.

What this means for your portfolio

Xbox reported that 4% of Game Pass subscribers stream more time each month via the cloud, and non-Game Pass customers will be able to buy cloud streaming time for games they already own. Xbox's new chief executive, Asha Sharma, has been reviewing business model changes to restore growth and improve profitability, and in July Xbox said it would pilot ad-supported game streaming.

What a Tariff Dividend Means for Your Money
