Kalshi's User Base Surges to 3 Million During World Cup, $1.2 Billion Wagered

Summary:
  • Prediction market platform Kalshi gained 3 million new users during the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament.
  • Traders placed $1.2 billion on Kalshi's contracts for predicting the World Cup winner, a record for a single market on the platform.
  • The company now faces the challenge of keeping those new users active after the tournament ends.

A World Cup Betting Boom

That is the most money ever traded on a single market at Kalshi, according to the company.

The final match between Spain and Argentina lands on Sunday, July 19, 2026. That is when the winner market closes.

The $1.2 billion figure marks a milestone for Kalshi, demonstrating its ability to attract a large user base through a major global event. The platform's growth during the World Cup highlights the potential of prediction markets to engage audiences beyond traditional political and economic topics. The winner of the final match will determine who cashes out on the $1.2 billion in contracts. The tournament's massive global audience provided a unique opportunity for Kalshi to showcase its platform.

Marketing Blitz with Celebrities and Soccer Stars

Kalshi did not just sit back and wait for the World Cup buzz to wash over it. The company went all in on advertising.

It signed deals with big names. Croatian soccer star Luka Modric and longtime Real Madrid coach José Mourinho appeared in ads. So did actor Timothee Chalamet in June and Colombian singer J Balvin in July.

The company also partnered with the Argentina national team. That gave them a huge boost when Lionel Messi posted about Kalshi on Instagram.

"The most important thing is enable creativity based on what's happening," said Kalshi CEO Tarek Mansour. He said the company's approach was to meet people where they already were.

"I don't think there's any game like football," noted Vijay Viswanathan, an associate dean for integrated marketing communications at Northwestern University.

But the celebrity roster also served another purpose. "This is also a way for them to say, 'oh, but we're also relevant to all these other people who might not be that interested in sports, too,'" said Johnson, the director of the neuroscience research group at Wharton, part of the University of Pennsylvania.

This broad-based advertising approach, featuring stars from sports, entertainment, and music, was designed to attract a diverse range of users. The partnership with Argentina and Messi's Instagram post provided a significant boost, particularly among soccer fans. By associating with such high-profile figures, Kalshi aimed to build trust and recognition quickly. The diverse lineup of celebrities - from soccer stars to Hollywood actors - reflects Kalshi's strategy of appealing to multiple demographics.

The Challenge: Keeping Users After the Final Whistle

New users are great. But turning them into regulars is the real test.

On days without a World Cup match, trading volume on Kalshi has dropped noticeably. "Our volumes are where the news is at," Mansour said.

When the biggest news in the world is a soccer match, that is where the money flows. Once the final whistle blows, Kalshi needs those 3 million new users to find something else to trade.

The company likely plans to lean on other high-profile events. "You have to believe there's not going to be any news after Sunday," Mansour said. "But the more probable thing is that there's going to be like a bunch of things going on in the world, and Kalshi's going to be there to service it."

Retaining these users will require Kalshi to offer compelling markets on upcoming events like the U.S. presidential election or the next Super Bowl. Kalshi's success in converting World Cup users into regular traders will be a key indicator of its long-term viability.
